Remember, Thanksgiving is just one day. It’s more about the company and the memories you create. Enjoy the day, savor the flavors, and maintain a balance that feels right for you.

  1. Start with Smaller Portions: It’s easy to get carried away with the abundance of food. Start by taking smaller portions. This way, you can enjoy a little bit of everything without overindulging. Fill one plate with your choices.
  2. Veggie Focus: Fill at least half your plate with vegetables. Go for the greens, carrots, and other non-starchy veggies available. They’re low in calories and high in nutrients. I know that Thanksgiving tables can have every starch known to man. Pick a couple of favorites and small portions.
  3. Choose Lean Turkey: Turkey is a great source of protein and can be quite lean, especially the white meat. Enjoy it without the skin to cut down on extra fat. My favorite part is the skin but limit yourself if you also love it.
  4. Mindful of Sides: Traditional sides like mashed potatoes and stuffing are often high in calories. Opt for smaller servings of these and seek out healthier options like roasted sweet potatoes or a fresh salad. These are the aforementioned starches.
  5. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. It’s easy to mistake thirst for hunger.
  6. Enjoy Dessert, But Don’t Overdo It: It’s okay to have a slice of pie, but try to keep it to a reasonable portion. Or, look for fruit-based desserts as an alternative.
  7. Stay Active: Incorporate some physical activity into your day. A post-meal walk is great for digestion and a wonderful way to spend time with family and friends. Fresh air will rejuvenate you. If it’s chilly, bundle up and enjoy the brisk air.
